References to lớn the Greco-Roman mythology

I honestly didn’t catch the Icarus references by myself, I saw it on Twitter. While I’m on things that aren’t by me, you can kiểm tra that analysisof the different artistic references, it’s quite detailed.

There are two paintings representing the one who wanted to lớn reach the sun:The Lament for Icarus, painted by Draper, & the Landscape with the Fall of Icarus painted by Bruegel.

*

You can find more info about these paintings as well as key points about Demian by checking the theory posts from Ask-BTS-stuff.

Icarus isn’t the only character from Greek mythology, the main room is filled with such art.

*

Perseus with the head of Medusa by Cellini:Medusa was a creature able khổng lồ petrify anyone who catches her eyes. She was killed by Perseus, son of Zeus and one of the greatest Greek hero.

*

Laocoön & His Sons is a sculpture showing Laocoön a Greek priest và his sons being killed by two snakes - the reason varies depending on the myth but usually, Neptune sends the snakes to kill him before he can prevent the horse from entering Troy.In the MV we only have Laocoön’s bust.

*

A nice
Crouching Venus, a statue representing Venus surprised during her bath.

There’s a second sculpture of Venus. It’s barely visible - just in the beginning và during the scene of the kiss. It’s a Venus de Milo. Venus symbolizes love & Beauty in the Greek (or rather her Greek equivalent: Aphrodite; note that despite its name, it’s a Greek statue) và Roman mythologies.

*

gotchickenidentified one more bust - the one on the left, on a pole. It’s a bust from the Diana of Versailles, which also appeared in AWAKE.

*

If you look closely you can see a little white sign under the painting, on the right, lượt thích a caption. It’s also present on some sculptures, maybe to give a museum vibe?

*

The statue behind j-hope is a modern version of Michelangelo’s Pietà. It represents Jesus after his crucifixion lying on his mother Mary.

j-hope was already associated with a motherly figure in his Short Film MAMA. That time it was Frau Eva, Demian’s mother. And earlier he was looking at the statue of Livia Drusilla.

Fun fact: the boys often refer khổng lồ him as the nagging mother of the group.

The bow, the arrow, & the shoot that throws paint on V are explained in the analysis I mentioned earlier.

There’s also an oddity. It’s neither about Greek mythology or Christianism. It’s a design for a poster, painted by Darsie Jappand called Regimental Band.

*

References to Demian

(I made a post about WINGS era in Demian, as I think it’ll be more clear to have the references in the context of the book. Here I’ll just danh mục the references seen in this video.)

Apparently, it’s the rule for all WINGS videos, so once again we can enjoy Namjoon’s voice citing Demian:

*

In the next scene, SUGA is seen playing the organ. There’s a character in Demian who plays the organ. Even the piece played wasn’t chosen randomly. It’s Buxtehude’s Passacaglia, which is mentioned in the book.

In the Concept Book, we learned that the pool around j-hope is another reference khổng lồ Demian. It’s a reminder of Sinclair’s mother giving him chocolate when he feels bad - the dark liquid is supposed to lớn be the chocolate.

References lớn the Short Films

Several elements remind the videos that teased the album.

*

The colorful fluids seen during RM’s part are similar to lớn the colors appearing on his arm in his Short Film, REFLECTION. Cảnh báo that if we look at it rationally it could very well also symbolize j-hope’s delirium in MAMA. Plus there is another colorful shot during Jimin’s part, so it’s probably more an aesthetic picture than a reminder.

*

You can see the busts from Jin’s Short Film
AWAKE, during the scene with the black winged statue. They were already here in the beginning but in the background. The one on the left is a bust of the Diana of Versailles identified by gotchicken and the one on the right a rococo bust of unknown origins identified by Salsoola on Reddit.

Little details

The music at the beginning of the MV when Jin is looking at the Brugel’s is another Bach’s piece, identified by Redditors. It’s the first seconds of the Mass in B minor - Kyrie.

As Jung Kook said during the episode, there is a lot of green: the wall behind Jung Kook & the group’s room, the light in SUGA và Jimin’s room, the Absinthe, the plants behind j-hope, Jung Kook’s tongue and the wax drop on his finger, the smoke in RM and Jungkook’s room, the water on the sides around j-hope and the tears on Jimin và the statue face. It’s revealed in the Concept Book that green symbolizes youth.

*

Talking about the blue, there’s also a good amount of it: Jung Kook’s room & SUGA và Jimin’s room have blue walls. SUGA also has a xanh outfit.

The last dominant màu sắc is fuchsia/purple. It’s not normally present on the set, it’s used as a filter on certain parts. It’s also the màu sắc of the water near j-hope when it explodes and of the flower near Jin at the over of the MV.

*

Thanks to lớn the episode and Rapmon showing an open page of his book, we know what he was reading to lớn Jung Kook: it’s The Ghost Belonged to lớn Me by Richard Peck.

Concerning the solo parts, several of the places can be connected.

*

Jung Kook’s solo part is phối in the same room as the group, where SUGA hides Jimin’s eye in the beginning.

*

There are actually two different shots of hands covering Jin - the second one appearing two times.

In the first, there are only RM’s & j-hope’s right hand, V’s left hand, & both of Jung Kook’s hands.

In the second one, all the boys except Jin have one hand in front of the oldest’s face. SUGA’s & Jimin’s disappear almost immediately though.

*

I mentioned it quickly when I talked about the colors but there is a whole scene where RM conscientiously prepares a glass of absinthe following what Wikipedia calls the Bohemian method.

It was really popular in Europe during La Belle Epoque, in the early XXth century.

*

As in “Epilogue: Young Forever” there are trắng feathers on Jung Kook’s set, this time khổng lồ symbolize Icarus.

*

The painting Jin was staring at in the beginning was replaced by a mirror in the end.

The inscription above the mirror is:

Man muss noch Chaos in sich haben um einen tanzenden Stern gebären zu können

It’s a quote from Nietzsche meaning“you must have chaos within you khổng lồ give birth lớn a nhảy đầm star”.

That same sentence was already seen on V’s concept photo.

*

The flower on our side is the white lily that’s been haunting the boys for more than a year now, especially in “I NEED U”, its Japanese version, the comeback trailer “Intro: 화양연화”,and AWAKE. Butwe can observe another flower instead of its reflection through the looking-glass.

I’m not sure but it looks like Celosia flamingo feather. Apparently, it represents foolishness, as well as affection (source #1, #2). For Fun Fun no Mi, it looks more like gayfeathers, which meaning is apology.

Lastly, as lalarushme made me notice, the direction of the MV seems to be influenced by the director Ace Norton.

Fun facts

The boys parodied several scenes of the MV during the 2017 Festa.

The MV was the main inspiration for the collaboration between BTS & the clothing brand System.

This whole theory is about BTS và their music videos, short films, solos, lyrics. The pictures of the boys are ALL FROM THE MUSIC VIDEOS. I vì not own them.

(There are mentions of death, suicide etc. If you are uncomfortable with that, then I would not recommend reading this.)

I will post the explanation khổng lồ each mv separately but please be careful to lớn follow the order of the explanations because otherwise it won’t make sense at all.

The painting on the picture is called The Fall of the Rebel Angels and it shows the fight between the good and the bad angels (fallen angels), which brings us lớn the concept of Blood Sweat & Tears.

We know that throughout the story, the situation of the boys is getting worse & worse & they're forced lớn fight against those depressive/suicidal thoughts and the aggressions (Suga - fight). But soon they can't endure it any longer và they feel the need lớn let out those negative things. So they start to bởi bad things, they start lớn sin. We don't know exactly what they bởi but it is for sure that they commit sins. Though, that doesn’t apply to each member. There are innocent ones.

So in Blood Sweat và Tears, the difference between wanting khổng lồ sin and resisting against sinning is shown (=> a fight between good & bad angels).

But the thing is, this entire mv takes place in a world in between life and death. (this is also mentioned in Demian). It's a world where you have lớn decide. Và this all happens after Jin fully realised that he is dead, which concluded into his dream world falling apart. So after realising, he's in the world in between life và death where he has lớn decide between good & evil. The difference between Jin, V, Jungkook & Rap Monster, Jhope, Jimin, Suga is that one group comes from the realm of death, while the other one comes from the realm of life, & they meet in the world between those two realms. Of course, this all indirectly happens in their mind và in reality, they're not together.

In the middle, we again have the painting that shows the fight between good và bad angels (fallen angels). The name of that painting is The Fall of the Rebel Angels. On each side of it we see entrances, one being black and the other one being white. So you either choose khổng lồ sin & go through the đen entrance, or you choose to lớn resist and go through the white entrance.
